Recognize the material

Phlox paniculata has small tubular florets with five spreading lobes in large terminal clusters. The leaves are opposite and the stems stiff and upright.

Botanical reference: Phlox paniculata — NC State Extension

Make a deliberate design choice

Judge the whole cluster rather than one floret. Tight buds and a fully open dome provide different color mass, although each is one purchase unit. Keep a cluster clear of larger heads if its outline matters.

A comparison you can reproduce

Compare two and four stems with the rest of the draft unchanged. Record real cluster width outside the tool. Garden advice about airflow and mildew is not a verified preservative recipe for cut stems.

The comparison is an original BLUMIVELA planning exercise, not a tested arrangement or a botanical treatment.
