Recognize the material

Gaultheria shallon has thick glossy oval-to-rounded leaves with finely bristled margins. Its drooping urn-like flowers differ from the leafy material commonly chosen for a green framework.

Make a deliberate design choice

Hold a real branch behind the focal group to see whether it frames or conceals the heads. Turn it to examine leaf spacing and usable base length before adding more green material.

A comparison you can reproduce

List one salal branch separately from other foliage and compare two only after a spread and vase-neck check. A purchase unit is not a fixed number of leaves, and florist-treated greenery is not edible produce.

The comparison is an original BLUMIVELA planning exercise, not a tested arrangement or a botanical treatment.
